BREAK IT DOWN MURAL
THE BACKGROUND
Drawing inspiration from my personal experiences and varied resources - everything from Greco Roman symbols to 70’s psych posters - allows my work to feel simultaneously nostalgic and contemporary.
I am well versed in creating large-scale impactful works. I draw inspiration from specific places, incorporate symbols from my own mythology, and interweave them into a cohesive vision. ‘Moving’ central figures play a large role in my work. I find inspiration across various genres + decades; from Greco Roman influences to 70’s psych posters. Drawing inspiration from varied resources and personal experiences, creates work that feels simultaneously nostalgic and contemporary.
THE CONCEPT
To create a mural that inspires connection by exploring what “Break it Down” means in terms of story-telling, breaking down barriers blocking connection, and of course, what break it down means in terms of music.
The mural aims to inspire, enlighten, and connect our community through vibrant colors and empowering imagery. References include black and white dancing photography, 60’s and 70’s poster art, mosaic patterns, and vintage book-covers.
THE PROPOSAL
A dynamic and provoking mural that explores the female experience in the Pacific Northwest - playful upon first glance but seeded with peculiarity.
Like a patchwork quilt, the mural will weave together elements from my personal mythology, our community, and the Pacific Northwest. In a fever dream like configuration, elements of local flora and fauna are stitched together with visualizations of story-telling and empowered central figures in a dialogue with one another. It’s not easy being a woman, let alone in the art world. I hope that this mural can be a bright spot of inspiration for other women and young girls, embodying a little bit of the beauty, strength, and tenacity that I’ve witnessed in female artists that came before me.

BREAK IT DOWN: THE COLOR
I like to work in a palette this is fairly neutral but a little magnified, often I refer to this as amped-up earth tones. I created this poster for Mavis Staples recently and would like to riff off this palette but bring in a few tile references for color inspiration to extend the palette.
